Legacy Windows Files / Applications / Tweaks

A source for some legacy Windows files and applications that are sometimes helpful.

If you need to download these from an actual vintage browser, go to: old.ibmfiles.com which has HTTP and legacy encoding support. Yeah, I get mad too when I just need to download one of these from a vintage browser and everything is locked to HTTPS.

General

• Classic version of MS Paint released on XP (also runs on newer versions of Windows)
• An older version of XMPlay (3.3), set up just the way I like with the original theme
• Jazz++ MIDI Sequencer (the compiled Win32 release)

Windows 98

Windows 98 / 98SE is still commonly used by enthusiasts who need it for the DOS support, or raw 9x support-- generally for games. Here is a collection of applications and updates used in conjunction with Windows 98.

• WinRAR 3.80, last version compatible with Windows 9x Installer is left unzipped because it would cause a catch22 situation!
• Opera 10.63, last version compatible with Windows 9x Opera 10 is also the most fully featured browser for Windows 9x, no other browsers retained backwards compatibility with such an old OS.
• SoundBlaster 16 Windows 9x driver (this is the Windows version of the driver*)
• Skype 3.8.0.188 (newest version compatible with Windows 9x Microsoft no longer allows this version of Skype to connect to their servers, so it's no longer useful. I'll leave it here for posterity though: in the event someone is still looking for it for whatever reason.
• CuteMouse (mouse DOS driver)
• Windows 98SE 3.3 Unofficial Update Pack (all of latest updates + more)
• 98SE Universal USB Support (to eliminate drivers needed) This works very well on my Pentium 1 / 2 computers, but on my Pentium 3 machines it seems to cause problems. Keep that in mind when you're using this utility.
• 98lite (speeds up 98 dramatically by separating IE)
• DirectX 9c (the last version compatible with Windows 98SE)

*If you need to configure AUTOEXEC.BAT for your SB16 for a non-plug and play, which is highly recommended, then it would go something like this (also remember to place this driver in C:\SB16 or modify the below fields referencing to wherever you put it):

Note: ensure you update the correct IRQ and DMA that yours is jumpered to, above it's IRQ 5 and DMA 1.

Windows Vista

Both 32-bit and 64-bit binaries are included in each zip file, unless there's only one 32-bit release which is the case for some of the applications. Some of these also work on XP and Windows 7.

FL Studio

• FL Studio 1.0 (Zipped Files)

Here are some of the installers from my archives (beginning at version 6 as that's the version I started with, the rest were obtained elsewhere). Keep in mind you will obviously need _your_ .REG key to unlock these, they operate in 'trial' mode by default. FL Studio 12 was one of the last versions Didier Dambrin was involved with, and so has many of his little flavour additions that were later removed when he retired from Image-Line. For confused travellers, these are 32-bit and Windows-only. History lesson: at the time Delphi was 32-bit-only Windows-only, thus so too were earlier versions of FL Studio, later Delphi gained cross-platform and 64-bit support and eventually FL Studio became 64-bit and now runs on macOS with modern releases. FL Studio 6 and 7 is supported on Windows 98 and beyond, FL Studio 12 is supported on Vista and beyond. You can download the legacy installers from their forum but it requires an account.
